The 2 teams have locked horns twice before however in an FA CUP first round tie in 1979.

Morecambe, struggling 2 divisions under the Football League in the old Northern Premier League had entered the first round proper courtesy of a 3-2 victory at their Christie Park ground over Droylsden.
They were rewarded with an home tie against Rotherham who were 9th in Division 3 at that time.
4,100 fans were present on November 24th 1979 and saw Rotherham take a first half lead through Richard Finney.
However the non-league side were not going out without a fight and a second half penalty from left winger McLachlan took the tie to a replay at Millmoor 3 days later.

The 2 teams were unchanged for the replay at Millmoor and a crowd of 5,671 were present, but there was to be no heroics from the non-leaguers this time as goals from the centre-half pairing of Paul Stancliffe and John Green either side of the break handed the tie to the Millers.

Rotherham however were eliminated at the second stage as Alliance Premier side Altrincham won 2-0 at Millmoor 3 weeks later.
