It’s the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday and Zipadeedoodah has been getting his heads round the facts and figures again…

Rotherham United entertain Leicester City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Quarter-Final at Don Valley on Tuesday, here’s a look at the history of Cup meetings between the two sides

As far as League meetings go, then the honours go undoubtedly to Leicester City.
In 13 games between the 2 sides at Millmoor, 8 have been drawn with the Millers winning just twice.
Way back in 1919 when Rotherham County won 1-0 with a goal from Harold Millership and ‘most recently’ in 1955 when goals from Terry Farmer, Ian Wilson and Ken Keyworth gave the Millers a 3-1 victory.
Away from home, Rotherham League victories are even more scarce, as a 37th minute goal from Shaun Barker on Boxing Day 2004 gave Rotherham their first ever League win at Leicester in 13 attempts.

However in Cup games, the pendulum has definitely swung Rotherham’s way, with 3 wins from the 4 ties so far.
First ever cup meeting between Rotherham United and Leicester City took place on 8th January 1955 in an FA Cup 3rd round tie in front of 20,428 at Millmoor.
Dennis Pell, playing in only his second game of the season, deputising for the injured Ian Wilson, scored the only goal to knock out first division Leicester.

Next up was a League Cup 1st round tie at first division Leicester’s former ground, Filbert Street on October 26th 1960.
6,244 fans saw The Millers take the first step on their route to the first ever League Cup final.
George Darwin scored Rotherham United’s first ever goal in League Cup history and his 3rd goal in 3 games since his signing from Derby County 2 week previous.
The second and deciding goal came from Keith Kettleborough who was sold to Sheffield United for £12.000 just over a month after this tie.

Back to the FA Cup now, as the 2 sides met on 9th March 1968 in a 5th round tie at Millmoor in front of 23,500, easily the highest crowd at Millmoor that season.
This was to be The Millers 2nd only appearance at that stage of the competition, a feat never matched to this day.
The other occasion was a 3-1 defeat by Aston Villa in round 5 in 1953.
In 1968 Leicester were still in Division 1, while Rotherham, were fighting a losing battle against relegation from Division 2.
Millers television history was also made this day as Rotherham featured on Match of the Day for the first time.
Leicester took an 21st minute lead when David Bentley gave away a penalty.
Millers keeper, Alan Hill made a fantastic save from young David Nish, but referee D Corbett from Wolverhampton ruled that Hill had moved too soon and Nish netted at the second attempt.
Rotherham equalised on 79 mniutes when an upfield punt from Trevor Swift was headed on by Jim Storrie for Steve Downes to turn and shoot under the diving keeper, Colin Mackleworth.
The game ended 1-1 and the replay at Filbert Street 4 days later attracted a crowd of 41,856 including 10,000 from Rotherham, and hundreds of Millers fans were still locked out of the ground.
Leicester made no mistake this time and although Rotherham took them to extra time, the game finished 2-0 to the first division team.

The first leg took place at Filbert Street, and 11,210 saw 2nd Division Leicester go into half time level with 3rd Division Rotherham at 1-1.
Big Scottish centre-forward Alan Young netting for the home side and left winger Richard Finney for the Millers.
A second half goal from Mick Gooding gave Rotherham the advantage for the second leg at Millmoor.
By half time in the second leg, Rotherham had built up a 3-1 aggregate lead courtesy of a goal from former Leicester player Rodney Fern.
His second of the game and another from Mick Gooding made the final score 3-0 (5-1 on aggregate) and the Rotherham fans amongst the crowd of 5,179 went home the happier.
