RUFC – Gaffer Wouldn’t Have Had Bottle To Take Pen

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne told Joe Newell that he was a bigger man than him after the Millers midfielder took the penalty in the one hundred and third minute that gave the Millers all three points over their South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers this afternoon at the New York Stadium.

‘I couldn’t have took that penalty,’ Warney told Freeview, ‘no chance.

‘I think that’s only the second penalty we’ve had this season.

‘I thought all our set-pieces were put into really good areas today and on another day Woody (Richard Wood) and Will Vaulks might have had one each and we might have made it more easy for ourselves.

‘But that’s not as entertaining for the fans.’

Meanwhile, Joe himself told iFOLLOW that it felt great to win the derby with the last kick of the match.

‘As soon as Smudge (Michael Smith) won the penalty he passed the ball straight to me and I was buzzing when it went in. I was a bit nervous but I was just trying to focus even though I had Tommy Rowe of Doncaster in my ear telling me I was going to go right so I thought I’d go left and the ‘keeper went the wrong way.

‘There was nothing drastic being one down at half-time and I always fancy us when we kick that way (towards the Millers fans) and we had a few chances.

‘It was a scrappy first half not helped by the sun but we played more on the front foot in the second half. I think we deserved the win. When we play at home we’re a force.’
