Rotherham United skipper Lee Frecklington took home the match ball last night after his first ever hat-trick helped the Millers get three points and climb to ninth place in League One.

Speaking to iFOLLOW after the five-one drubbing of Walsall at the New York Stadium, Frecks said, ‘I’m thrilled to say I’ve got a hat-trick in my career.

‘The first one just dropped out of the sky and they are the ones you try to connect with as best as possible. Nine times out of ten they end up in the stand but, thankfully today, it flew in the back of the net.

‘The second one was a late run into the box and a good ball in from Will (Vaulks) and I managed to get contact on it.

‘We were four-one up and trying to secure the score line and I was a bit hesitant to get forward for the third. But I saw the break on and thought sod it I’ll go for it and Bally’s (David Ball) put a great one across the goal and I was delighted to see it go into the back of the net to finish the hat-trick.

‘When you play one up front it gives a license for midfielders to bomb on which suits myself and Richie Towell very well. And it’s nice to play with Kieffer (Moore) because he’s been brilliant at holding the ball up and you can make your runs off him.

As skipper, Frecks was asked how, at four-one up, he managed to get the team to keep going and he replied, ‘Whenever in the game you are four-up and they get a goal back you are always going to get that edgy spell. You just have to get them to believe in the things we do right and keep trying to do the things that got us four-one up in the first place.

‘This has been a huge ten days for the football club and one we desperately needed. To get three wins gives you confidence. There’s a good spirit round the camp and we’ve got a very good squad.

‘Our game is based around effort and hard work and when you do that against teams here (New York Stadium) it’s very difficult for them to come here which is what we are aiming for.’

Well, I was especially pleased because I worried that in the previous two games Frecks had not played to his usual standard……but who can be disappointed with a hat trick?!

I’m really pleased for Frecks, like yu Sixpence, I didn’t think he’d looked his best over the last few games
