Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans said that was the worst first half he`d seen the Millers defence play.

Speaking after the six-two defeat at Port Vale, the Millers Boss told Radio Sheffield, ‘It was wholly unacceptable.

‘I think our back four and central midfield players looked all over the place. We lacked the discipline to mark people and for thirty minutes it was embarrassing.

‘We managed to get back in it at four-one and at half-time spoke about winning the second half and if we got a goal it would change. And, at four-two there was only one team in it. And it`s dead easy to sit here and say ‘if` but if we`d gone four-three there could have been a turn-round of monstrous proportions. But the two goals we conceded in the second half were very, very sloppy.

‘But I thought we were the better team in the second half apart from the two individual errors for their goals.’

Evans said he was surprised in the first thirty minutes saying, ‘When you see defenders unable to pick up strikers, pick up wide players and match their runs then it is surprising but football surprises you every day from training to playing.

‘We will be in the training ground tomorrow and sit and watch the game and try and pick the holes out of it, try to get it right and work hard towards next Saturday.

‘When you are four-nil down you are thinking, first and foremost, how you can stop the damage getting any worse and secondly you think about the people who have paid hard earned money to come down here today who we`ve let down. The players have let themselves down today and the people inside the club as well as the people who follow us home and away.

‘But credit to Port Vale who were full of energy and full of desire and commitment today.

‘But we are going to re-group and bounce back and take it on the chin and a message to the fans is don`t go too off your head at the players, I mean I`m the manager, I pick the team.’
