Rotherham United Reserves 2 Newcastle United Reserves 2

Rotherham United Reserves managed a draw this afternoon against Peter Beardsley’s Newcastle side in the Central League Cup game.

The Millers were quick out of the box with Jerry Yates crossing to Alex Wiles only for the youngster to see his shot go past the post. Within minutes the Millers had another chance to open the scoring when Kuda Muskwe met a cross from Mason Warren only to see his header go wide before Yates had a good chance but the shot was wide. So it was a little against the run of play that Newcastle took the lead with Liam Smith put the ball past Lawrence Bilboe in the home goal. But just three minutes later Rotherham were level after Yates got another good ball through to Wiles and he beat Magpies ‘keeper Nathan Harker from some twenty yards out. Callum Roberts and Liam Gibson went close for the visitors before Harker did well to keep out a superb curling shot from Warren.

The second half was a bit more low key with the only real shot towards goal was from Newcastle’s Callum Roberts. But on seventy minutes the Millers took the lead when Fabian Bailey found himself in the right place at the right time and prodded home the ball to make it two-one to the hosts. And it could have been more a couple of minutes later Reece McGinley, on for McCarthy, skipped past the Magpies defence and crossed to Jamie Yates who saw his header come off the post and away to safety. Muskwe was guilty of missing from six yards out when he skied the ball over the post. At the other end a great save from Lawrence Bilboe stopped what looked like a certain goal from the lively Roberts. But on seventy-eight minutes no-one could stop Roberts who broke into the box and put the ball just inside the near post to make it two-all. Newcastle had another couple of shots which were close but the last game of 2016 ended in a draw.

Some good news for Millers fans is that Kirk Broadfoot managed the whole ninety minutes which can only help in his come-back.
