RUFC – Debate

Foo, our debating colleague, pondered on the question:

When you have 2 players from one team between the last man and the goal of the other team, as long as they are playing the ball back, they’re not off side.

Is this a good rule or a stupid one?

Should Off Side mean Off side, no matter which direction the ball is played?

Here are some of the answers we got:

The Villager: Soz Foo but this ruling is one that has never and will never be changed, as long as the ball is played away from the ‘goal’ you are attacking you can’t be offside hence you cannot be offside from a corner even if there is only your players in the box!!!
-and followed it with:
Adding on to that, I do wish they would sometimes let it be……all this not interfering with play crap, as the great Brian Clough once said ‘if he’s not interfering with play, what’s he doing on the bloody pitch’!!!
If you are offside, you are offside whether the ball is being played to you or not (at least everyone would know the rules then)

Foo: Quote: TV:’if he’s not interfering with play, what’s he doing on the b****y pitch’!!!

Handy Haddock: I always thought it was Bill Shankly said that but you’re probably right TV, it sounds like a Cloughism just as much!
I’ve seen offside from the second touch following a corner, when we took a short one and the ball was one-twod straight back to the corner taker and in the meantime every one of the oppo had (literally) left their post and legged it upfield a bit

Me: It’s a stoopid B****y rule anyway! Like LBW in cricket – if your leg wasn’t before the wicket then you’d get bowled everytime (!)

The Villager: Caz, did you know that if the ball in cricket hits you anywhere (leg, foot, head, nose, bum ,nuts….etc) and you are in front of the stumps, you are still out LBW!!!
Now, the offside rule is easy after that int it!!!

The Ref: Tsk, amateurs…….
