Rotherham United have said they are ‘sorry’ to the fans who travelled to Don Valley on Tuesday night, not knowing that the game had been called off.

Both Morecambe fans and Millers fans arrived to find the game had been postponed at 6.00pm due to a waterlogged pitch after heavy rain had fallen all afternoon.

The Morecambe team will be reimbursed for their travel costs when the game is eventually played from the gate receipts.

Chief Operating Officer, Paul Douglas, told The Advertiser, ‘We managed to contact the match sponsors and service providers in good time but we want to apologise to the supporters who had already travelled to the game. We made every effort to get the game on, having an initial pitch inspection at 5.30pm and hoping that the rain would ease off before we finally postponed at 6.00pm.

‘The problem was that more water was falling than we were able to take off and the referee had no choice, in the end, but to call the game off. We are extrememly lucky that Don Valley don’t charge us for postponements.’

This is the fourth game the Millers have had to postpone recently – Aldershot when the pitch was waterlogged and twice against Bury for snow and a frozen pitch.

The game against Morecambe has been re-arranged for Tuesday, 21st April.
