Rotherham United’s Assistant Manager Richie Barker was hoping there would be some good news about defender Joe Mattock coming into the weekend game at home to Plymouth.

Joe was replaced by Shaun Cummings in the final minutes of Saturday’s game at Bloomfield Road after treatment on the pitch.

‘He has been responding to treatment fairly well but you never know until someone goes out and trains so we are hoping he will be training either today (Thursday) or tomorrow, ‘ Barker told iFOLLOW. ‘If he doesn’t train tomorrow then he’s no chance of playing on Saturday.

‘He might have seen the game through last Saturday but with it being only five minutes but one final sprint down the line and we could have been looking at weeks without him.

‘But one persons unfortunate circumstances, like Joe’s, could be someone else’s opportunity and that could be Ben Purrington. And if there is an opportunity for Ben what a great game for him to come back into against his former club. He’s been back in training for ten days so if we have to throw him in he will be ready to go.

‘In an ideal world we could do with him getting a reserve game but unfortunately there isn’t any for the time being.

‘Although with the injuries we’ve got we probably wouldn’t be able to field a reserve team at the moment.’

Ben Purrington hasn’t played since he went off on twenty minutes in the game at Blackburn in September with that being only his sixth appearance of the season.
