Grimsby Reserves 3 Rotherham Reserves 0

A very young Rotherham United Reserve side lost this afternoon at Blundell Park to an experienced Grimsby team.

The Millers had quite a bit of possession in the opening minutes but the Grimsby defence were up to the challenge. Eventually the Mariners got more into the game and it was the visiting defence that had problems and the game was just twelve minutes old when Josh Venney got a cross to Jack Mackreth who went by his marker turned and put the ball beyond Bilboe in the Millers’ goal. Former Miller Marcus Marshall had a good afternoon for the hosts and often managed to open up play in the first half but the Mariners couldn’t take advantage from it.

Rotherham began the second half well and but once Grimsby settled it was Marcus Marshall again causing problems before he shot at goal on fifty-two minutes and the ball deflected off a visiting leg and into the back of the net. It could have been three ten minutes later but after doing all the hard work Venney put the ball wide. Both Marshall and Mackreth had chances before the winger got his second goal of the day with eight minutes to go when he shot across Bilboe and into the net to make it three-nil to the Mariners.
