The first game of 2009 ended in a one all draw with Ian Sharps bundling the ball over the line on the ninetieth minute, after Dagenham had taken the lead at Don Valley just after half-time. The next game at Luton was called off because of bad weather so the next team to make the trip to Don Valley was Bournemouth. A stunning goal from Mark Hudson on eighteen minutes gave the Millers all three points, with the only other real incident of the game coming in the sixty-fourth minute when Danny Hollands was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The following Tuesday was the first leg of the area final of the Northern section of the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy and over two thousand of the Millers` faithful travelled to Glanford Park to take on Scunthorpe. Unfortunately, the Iron were too strong for the visitors and took a two-nil lead into the second leg.

The Millers next two league games were away and both ended in defeat, the first at Grimsby when the final score line was 3-0 and the second a 1-0 loss at Darlington. On the final day of the month, Macclesfield were at Don Valley and the last three defeats were put to the back of the team and fans` minds when goals from Mark Hudson and Reuben Reid gave the home side all three points.
