Rotherham Reserves 1 Gateshead Reserves 0

A late goal gave the Millers all three points in the sunshine this afternoon at Roundwood.

The Millers fielded a young side and it was almost a very good start when Jerry Yates tried his luck from five yards out but was unlucky to see his shot blocked. On twelve minutes Kuda Muskwe jumped with Gateshead ‘keeper Alex Baird with the visiting shot-stopped just managing to push the ball away to safety. At the other end Liam Thear moved into space only to see his shot go just wide of the far post. Darnelle Bailey-King was the next to have a shot for the Millers only to see the ball put just wide by a defender while a Ryan Wilson free-kick for the visitors was headed wide by a home defender with the resulting corner coming to nothing.

In the opening minutes of the second half the hosts should have gone ahead when a lovely cross from Kuda Muskwe found Mason Warren but the young left-sided player put his effort wide when it really looked easier to score. Millers’ ‘keeper Peter Denton did well a few minutes later to get down to a good free-kick from Ryan Wilson. Five minutes into the half Jerry Yates lost out in the area to Tom Allen but the ball was heading towards Muskwe who was well tackled as he was about to get his foot to the ball. Gateshead started to get more into the game and Liam Thear had a shot that went just over the bar before the same player found himself one-on-one with Denton only for the Millers shot stopper to trip him and give away a penalty. Tom Marshall stepped up to take the spot kick but Denton made amends by making a superb save. Adam Johnson came on to replace Muskwe and with his first touch of the game was only denied a goal by some good work from Gateshead ‘keeper Alex Baird. Mason Warren was the next to see a shot go just over while a shot at the other end from Drane suffers the same fate. With minutes to go the Millers got a corner which fell to Warren but after wrong footing his marker his shot was wide of goal. With it looking like the game would end goalless Brandon Potts, on for Lucas, slammed the ball past Baird from just outside the area to give Rotherham a one-nil win.
