Rotherham United’s caretaker manager, Mark Robins, told The Star that it had been a difficult week for everyone at the club after the sacking of Alan Knill.

‘After going so long without a win that’s all we wanted,’he said, ‘and to do so in the manner we did has really lifted everyone at the club. We hoped to get the supporters smiling again and that’s what has happened.’

Robins left skipper Ian Sharps out of the team on Saturday, not even naming him amongst the substitutes, and gave the armband to Craig Fleming.

‘I decided to do that,’ said Robins, ‘because I wanted to make sure I had an extra positive option on the bench.’

That option was winger, Sam Duncum. He also recalled Justin Cochrane into midfield.
