Reserves Report

This afternoon Rotherham United reserves were taking on their counter parts from Huddersfield Town.

The game started brightly and the millers almost whent in front after only two minutes when Lucas Akins sold Matty Young short with a pass on halfway and the resultant through ball by a Rotherham midfielder was just too long for Millers striker Marc Newsham to get on the end off.

On 13 minutes town thought they had the first goal but Matty Youngs effort was ruled out for offside.

After this the game became a bit scrappy with both sides unable to make any real headway until the 21st minute when James Hand fed John McAliskey in the box. The big striker turned well and gave the ball to Danny Racchi, but his attempted shot was blocked well by a defender and the follow up by Matty Young again was well saved by Gary Montgomery.

Everthing changed on the 30th minute mark when Rotherham striker Dave Hibbert gave the millers the lead after a good pass by Newsham.

Adnan Ahmed was the next to threaten for Town, hitting a tame shot straight at Montgomery after doing the hard work well – outpacing centre-back Nathaniel Kerr to the ball on the edge of the visitor’s box.

Lucas Akins threatened a minute later, collecting the ball on the Town left from Hand before curling a shot with his right foot that Montgomery collected above his head.

Things got better for Rotherham when on 41 minutes young millers midfielder Stephen Brogan extended their lead with a 20 yard effort curling over Town keeper Rachubka.

Half Time, Huddersfield 0 – 2 Rotherham

The second half started brightly for town but they failed to make any breakthrough or to test millers keeper Montgomery.

After 61 minutes Town had a period of pressure again that started with a fantastic cross-field ball by Danny Racchi found right winger James Hand in space, but he was closed down well by Hull loanee Scott Wiseman and had to settle for a corner.

After 20 minutes Rotherham went on the attack when Scott Wiseman carrying the ball down the right to the bye-line before pulling it back to Yates, who’s well struck first time shot was straight at Rachubka.

The next effort on goal came from Huddersfield when John McCombe got an effort on target after 78 minutes, but failed to properly test the Rotherham ‘keeper.

At this point of the game play was switching quickly to either end but with no real threat to either keeper resulting from the play.

The next real threat to goal came from Rotherham when Racchi lost the ball in the centre circle and almost cost Town a third after 85 minutes – impressive Millers midfielder Brogan stealing the ball before advancing and curling a left footed effort against the bar.

This was the last effort on goal from either side as the referee blew for full time on 91 minutes to give the millers the spoils.
