Quiet Deadline Transfer Day For Millers But . . .

It was a quiet last day of the transfer window yesterday for Rotherham United and reading between the lines I feel that Millers Manager was slightly disappointed with that.

It seems he had been trying to get someone in and it seems that it might have been close but the player’s club decided that they couldn’t let the Millers Boss know whether it was a ‘yes or no’ until today (Friday).

I imagine that’s because they didn’t know, until late, if they would be getting someone in this players place. Hey, that’s Football Deadline Day for you!

So, as I thought on Wednesday, the Millers will be using the loan system (which ends at the end of the month).

For many years I was quite against the loan system – why would players want to come and ‘help’ another club, why would they want to play their best for a club they probably weren’t staying with? And this didn’t change when Steve Evans was in charge and brought players in on loan who played once or twice and we never saw again.

But, after last season, I’m warming towards loans.

Our loanees all helped us last season. Possibly without Kieffer Moore’s goals we might not have got to Wembley. Josh Emmanuel got better and better as the season went on and Richie Towell held the midfield together on more than one occasion. Marek Rodak brought off some wonderful saves and we now have him back for another season while I thought Caolan Lavery did well in the minutes he had on the pitch. They all fitted in the team, in fact, you forgot they didn’t really belong. To me, that’s what a loanee should be like.

So, we might not have bought any new faces in but if we can ‘borrow’ ones that do as well as the ones did last season I don’t think we’ll have done too badly.
