|

Rotherham United travel to the JW Stadium tomorrow to take on Wigan Athletic.

Coming into this game on the back of a cup defeat the Millers, after just one game, are top of the league after winning their first game of the season. Wigan beat Hull City on penalties in the Carabao Cup in mid-week losing their opening league game away at Sunderland.

Wigan could drop some of their starting players in the win against Hull to the bench and it’s probable that the likes of Charlie Wyke, Ben Amos and Jack Whatmough returning on Saturday.

With supporters returning for the first time tomorrow since the Covid outbreak nearly eighteen months ago Manager Leam Richardson is expecting it to be an emotional day. Speaking to their Official Site the Boss said, ‘I’m looking forward to it because it’s been a long time coming.’ Focussing on Saturday’ opponents he carried on, ‘Rotherham are a fantastic side and a lot of the lads have played together for a long time which you will see on Saturday. They know the dark arts in football and when to play, and when not to play, and they know what their strengths and weaknesses are. Paul (Warne) has built a solidity around the place and it shows within the team.’

The Millers will be without injured pair Curtis Tilt and Angus MacDonald for the next few games while latest signing Tolaji Bola will probably be in the travelling squad though likely to start on the bench. Like the hosts, Rotherham will make some changes to the team that started the cup game on Tuesday.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield Rotherham Boss Paul Warne, a former Wigan player, said that he thought that Latics Manager Leam Richardson had done a good job last season in a difficult time saying, ‘He steadied the ship through some hazardous wars and I think Wigan have an exciting season ahead of them. I think their starting eleven is up there amongst the best starting eleven of the week.’

The referee for this game is Shropshire’s Rob Lewis.
