If ever there has been a more versatile player than Neil, he must have been a good one.
He served his home town club, Rotherham United as an apprentice and he was still a teenager when he made his first team debut in Tommy Docherty’s first game in charge.
Equally at home in midfield or the defence he also played up front with an excellent scoring record.
When his team were 3-2 against Plymouth, he made the equaliser and then scored the winner so impressively that Argyle signed him two days later.
Operating in the centre of defence at Plymouth in 1972-73, he was the second top scorer and he went on to give excellent service to three more clubs before trying his hand in the American Soccer League.
While still a youngster at Rotherham, he gained England Youth honours.
