Rotherham United welcome Port Vale to the New York Stadium for the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy which is the first time the pair have met in this competition.

The Millers got through to this round by winning all their three games and topping Group E. Their first game was a six-nil away win against Doncaster Rovers before beating Scunthorpe four-one and a Manchester City U21 side five-nil both at the New York Stadium.

Vale got through to this round after finishing underneath Bolton Wanderers in Group D. Their first game in this season’s competition was a three-two loss away at the University of Bolton Stadium but they won the next game at Vale Park one-nil against Rochdale. Earlier this week they beat a Liverpool U21 side five-nil again at home.

Rotherham won this competition when it was called the Auto Windscreens Shield Trophy at the ‘Old’ Wembley in 1996. The Millers beat Shrewsbury Town two-one with Nigel Jemson scoring twice for the Millers on their first Wembley visit with Mark Taylor getting the Shrews goal ten minutes from time.

Port Vale have won the competition twice in the past, first in the 1993 season when it was under the name of the Football League Trophy when goals from Paul Kerr and Bernie Slaven gave them a two-one win over Stockport County and then when it was called the LDV Vans Trophy in the 2001 season at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff which was another two-one win this time against Brentford. Despite going one down to an early goal Vale won a seventy-sixth minute penalty which Marc Bridge-Wilkinson put away with Steve Brooker getting the winner seven minutes later.

The Millers and Port Vale have met sixty-one times in the past in League and Carling Cup competitions, the last time at the New York Stadium being in April 2014 in a League One game that saw the hosts Richie Smallwood sent-off on the stroke of half-time. Kieran Agard came on and scored the only goal of the game on seventy-nine minutes.
