Rotherham United midfielder Ollie Rathbone wore the captain’s armband for the Millers South Yorkshire derby at the New York Stadium today.

With club captain Richard Wood not in the squad and his usual deputy Dan Barlaser off to pastures new Millers Manager Matt Taylor handed the responsibility to Ollie – and he did a fine job.

Ollie said that it was a really proud day for him and his family captaining the side saying, ‘The manager told me yesterday and it’s one of the up moments in my career. I like to try and lead by example, wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything I wouldn’t do and I’m massive on encouragement. If someone does something well I let them know, if they make a mistake it’s gone.’

Speaking to Radio Sheffield about the goalless draw, Ollie said, ‘It was a proper derby.

‘We had good moments and probably the best chances in the first half and I think they were probably the team on top in the second half so it was a fair result for me.

‘It was a helter-skelter game right from the off and I hope that is something that will continue for us because I think that’s when we are at our best.

‘Everyone is together in the way that we want to play, everybody understands how we want to play and that’s simple because we need to get points on the board. Our aim is to try and get away from where we are in the table (Ed Note – Rotherham are currently twentieth in the Championship on thirty-two points) and we’ve got enough quality in the squad to really kick on and attack the last sixteen or seventeen games.’

Asked about the last three games, where the Millers haven’t done half bad against teams at top when they played them, Ollie replied, ‘I think we’d have taken five points from nine.’

The twenty-six year old always plays with everything he’s got and did that again today with the only blot being the yellow card he got on the seventy-eighth minute.
