New Year’s Day Head-to-Head – Millers v Lincoln City

Rotherham United travel into Lincolnshire for their first game of 2025 when they go to Sincil Bank to take on Lincoln City.

September 2021 was the last time the pair met at Sincil Bank where Michael Smith gave the Millers a twenty-two minute lead. Lewis Fiorini equalised ten minutes into the second half despite the visitors laying siege to City’s goal with ‘keeper Josh Griffiths playing a blinder.

In February 2020 the game here saw Matt Crooks score two minutes into the second half to give the Millers all three points.

The time before they met on Lincoln soil was in March 2011 which was the first game after Ronnie Moore had been sacked. His son, Ian Thomas-Moore got a hat-trick on this Friday night with other goals coming from Danny Harrison, Ryan Taylor and Jason Taylor to give the visitors a six-nil win. Lincoln went down to ten men just after the hour mark when Pat Kanyuka was dismissed for a second yellow card.

February 2010 also saw a Rotherham victory at Sincil Bank when Moses Swabu was sent off on thirteen minutes for hauling Adam Le Fondre down in the penalty area and Alfie scored the resulting penalty. Gary Roberts doubled the score on sixty-five minutes while Steven Lennon got a consolation for the Imps thirteen minutes from the end.

A year earlier Micky Cummins got the only goal of the game in this match giving Rotherham another win at Lincoln while the game in 2008 saw four goals, three of them to Rotherham with Derek Holmes getting a hat-trick with Jamie Forester scoring for the hosts. A minute into time added on Shane Clarke was shown a straight red for a nasty foul on Mark Hudson.

Although the Imps have beaten Rotherham on home soil in the Football League Trophy the last time they won at home against the Millers in the league was back in August 1999 when a Terry Fleming penalty just after the hour mark gave Lincoln the lead. Two minutes later Lee Philpott made it two-nil with Paul Warne getting a late consolation goal for the Millers.

It was less than a month ago that the Millers and Imps met at the New York Stadium which was a two-one win for the hosts – Sam Nombe and Sean Raggett scoring for Rotherham, Jovon Makama for Lincoln.
