The Boxing Day game at the New York Stadium saw five goals and was definitely a game of two halves.

The Millers seemed to be coasting when they took a three goal lead into half-time – Aimen Belaid scoring his first goal in a Rotherham shirt on eight minutes when it hit him and went in after a miscued shot from skipper Lee Frecklington before Danny Ward scored fourteen minutes later although it looked to us in the stands that Richard Wood got a foot to it. A Tom Adeyemi effort from twenty-five yards left the crossbar rattling before a Ward shot came off Wigan ‘keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen hitting his own player Dan Burn and going into the net.

Wigan came out the stronger in the second half and played wide which the Millers found difficulty with and six minutes in Yanic Wildschut sent a curling shot into the back of the net to make it three-one. On seventy-nine minutes some good work from Andy Kellett saw him get the ball to Jordi Gomez who found the bottom corner of the net with his shot. Wigan thought they’d got a point from the game when Will Grigg put the ball in but was penalised for handball.

The Millers hung on for three points – the second win under Paul Warne – which sees them five points behind Wigan with Burton Albion the visitors on Thursday evening.
