Millers Win First Pre-Season Friendly

Parkgate FC 1 Rotherham United 3

Rotherham United began their pre-season fixtures this afternoon with a three-one win over Parkgate at Roundwood.

The game was brought forward due to the England World Cup game kicking off at 3.00pm and it was a sunny, hot lunchtime for the fans who turned out to watch, Millers fans catching a first glimpse of the summer signings.

It was just on the five minute mark when the visitors took the lead when a Kyle Vassell ball went across the face of goal finding Michael Smith who put the ball in the net. A good save two minutes later stopped Joe Newell adding to the score before Vassell thought he’d scored his first in a Rotherham shirt but the goal was ruled out. Smith had two more chances but put headers wide, one after some nice work from Ben Purrington, before half-time.

Joshua Kayode might have made it two with five minutes of the second half gone but saw the ball go inches wide of the upright and moments later he saw an effort come back off the post, going to safety. Anthony Forde tried to get in on the act only for his shot to thump against the crossbar and fall into the Parkgate ‘keeper’s arms. Minutes after Jerry Yates had sent a shot wide a super effort from Forde from some twenty-five yards out found the back of the net which was followed by an effort just as good from a free-kick from the Steelmen’s Collinson giving the Millers a two-one lead. With three minutes left on the clock Rotherham made it three-one with a second goal from Forde.
