Rotherham United make their third visit to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday when they travel to take on Sunderland with referee Ben Toner from Lancashire is in charge.
Ben was promoted to the Football League from the Football Conference in May 2015. During the summer of 2014 Ben was selected to officiate in the Dallas Cup in the United States where he represented the PGMOL and the FA.
He is also the referee who was removed from Blackpool’s League One match against Portsmouth days after the Lancashire side’s owners, the Oystons, were found to have operated an illegitimate stripping’ of the club in November 2017. The FA said it wasn’t because Mr Toner’s name was causing mirth on social media but ‘due to the increased attention surrounding this weekend’s League One fixture between Blackpool and Portsmouth, PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) has determined it would be appropriate for a Select Group One referee to take charge of proceedings at Bloomfield Road.’
This is just the second time Ben and the Millers have met the first time being in March 2018 at Sixfields Stadium when Rotherham took on Northampton. Michael Smith put the visitors in front on seventeen minutes plus second-half goals from David Ball and Richie Towell saw the Millers take the three points back to Rotherham. Joe Mattock, Semi Ajayi and Jon Taylor saw yellow that afternoon.
In the six games Ben has been in charge of so far this season he has shown sixteen yellow cards and one red card.
Running the line on Tuesday night we have Gareth Mellor and Richard Wigglesworth with Garreth Rhodes being the Fourth Official.
