Millers Pen Back Wolves

Once again the Millers took a Championship side to penalties in the Carling Cup and once again beat them – this time four-three, with Andy Warrington pulling off a great save from the spot.

The Millers could have been in the lead within the first minute of the game as Reuben Reid got clear but his low shot was saved by Carl Ikeme in the Wolves goal. Fifteen minutes later Drewe Broughton got the ball to Alex Rhodes who also saw Ikeme save his shot. Wolves had their first shot at goal from a corner but Neil Collins headed it over before a Stephen Ward goal was ruled out for offside. In the twenty-fifth minute, Karl Henry had a shot at goal but blazed it over the net. Ten minutes before half-time, Broughton was bundled over in the penalty area but his appeals for a spot kick fell on deaf ears and from the clearance, Danny Harrison had a shot that dipped just over the crossbar. Referee, Mr Swarbrick, seemed to take a dislike to the home side and was booed off at half time by the Millers fans.

Warrington came into his own at the start of the second half when he dove and palmed away a strong strike from Ward and on the sixtieth minute a low shot from Michael Gray went whistling past the far post. The Millers could have opened the scoring when a Reid pass just ran away from Mark Hudson. Reid himself had a goal bound shot blocked by the Wolves defenders and in the dying seconds of the game Ikeme spilled the ball and Broughton’s shot went just wide of the post. The Millers seemed to have plenty of crosses into the box but often there was no one there to get on the end of them while Wolves seemed to run short of ideas early on in the match.

Extra Time

Both sets of players were looking tired as extra time started but it was Wolves who had the first chance with Stephen Elliot, on for Gray, saw his shot go wide and then Kightly had a looping shot that went just over. Alex Rhodes had a shot for the Millers that Ikeme managed to get down to. At the start of the second period of extra time Nick Fenton in the Millers defence deflected a shot from Elliot behind for a corner. In the final minutes, Ryan Taylor, on for Broughton, broke free of his marker but he over ran the ball and Ikeme came out to save.
