Rotherham United got back to winning ways against a poor Grimsby Town this evening at Blundell Park.

The Millers dominated the first half and it was Tom Pope who had the first header that went just over the bar from a Jamie Green cross. Ian Sharps, Nicky Law and Paul Warne all had shots cleared before a Danny Harrison shot on twenty minutes cleared the bar. Andy Warrington easily saved from Nick Hegarty before the same player had a shot that went harmlessly wide. Ex Miller, Barry Conlon cleared a shot by Law before Tommy Forecast in the Mariners goal, cleared a Dale Tonge cross and saved a shot from Sharps. Five minutes before half-time, a ball from Dale Tonge found Danny Harrison but his header cleared Forecast’s bar.

The first action of the second half was when Marc Joseph replaced birthday boy, Jamie Green who had been fouled quite early in the first half. It was the home side who had the first shot when a Jamie Clarke cross was cleared by Sharps and a minute later Warrington saved from Hegarty. At the other end Adam Le Fondre tried a long range shot that went well wide of the target. But the Millers pressure paid off and they were awarded a penalty when ex Miller Robbie Stockdale decided to have a game of basketball in the area and up stepped Le Fondre to score his first Millers goal. While he aeroplaned over to the visiting Rotherham fans to celebrate, Ian Sharps was replaced by Mickey Cummins. The goal seemed to spur the home side on a bit and eleven minutes later they eventually broke down the offside play and Peter Sweeney scored from twenty yards out. Town held the lead for just three minutes before a Law free kick found Cummins who rose to beat Forecast and head the ball into the top corner of the net. And a minute later the visitors could have gone further into the lead when Nick Fenton’s powerful header was headed off the line by Sweeney. In the final minutes of the game Le Fondre, who was getting into some good positions, found Law who sidefooted the ball towards the net but was denied a goal by the bottom of the post.

A well deserved three points for the Millers this evening.
