Millers lose to Dons

A Mark Wright goal in the eighty-second minute saw MK Dons open up an eleven point gap at the top of League Two at Millmoor this afternoon in their tenth away win of the season.

But, it was the Millers who came out the more lively with a Chris O’Grady shot going just over the bar and Ian Ross got on the end of a Stephen Brogan pass to head just wide of the upright. Mark Hudson saw his shot go just off target while a Ross corner was headed away for a throw-in and a Derek Holmes header went just wide from a Marc Joseph cross. Jordan Hadfield, given his first start, was guilty of firing a shot just wide for the visitors when he went for placement rather than power and Graham Coughlan also headed a cross away from a corner. But the battle was really in midfield today where Pablo Mills frustrated the visitors and had the knack of keeping hold of the ball when it looked like it was lost. The best move of the game came just before half time when Brogan ran down the left wing, crossed to Ross whose half volley was destined for the bottom corner but French goalkeeper, Willy Gueret was equal to it and stopped it going in.

The Millers came out for the second half on the attack and had a corner cleared before a Derek Holmes cross found O’Grady who saw his shot blocked on the line. The visitors had a string of corners themselves but found Andy Warrington in the way before Brogan went down the other end, got the ball to Holmes who flicked it past the visiting ‘keeper only for Coughlan to divert it wide. Then in the eighty-second minute a Millers free kick was cleared to Dons substitute Jemal Johnson who turned, spread the defence, squared the ball to Wright who put the ball under Warrington. Even then the home side could have won it and a corner in the final minutes from Hudson was easily saved by Gueret.

Most of Millmoor’s highest league crowd of the season went home disappointed today – let’s hope they saw enough to make them want to come back to watch the Millers again.
