Millers Chairman Not Happy With Postponements

Rotherham United Chairman Tony Stewart OBE says that he would be ‘disappointed’ if the Millers, who are currently second in the table, had to retain their League One status for another year due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Speaking yesterday to Sky Sports News Mr Stewart said that, after hearing Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying that everything was to ‘carry on as before’ he was surprised when, just a few hours later, all the Football League games were postponed until, at least, the beginning of April.

‘I would have liked the games to precede,’ the Rotherham owner, Chairman and local businessman said. ‘This will probably break down all the expectations we had and I think we’d be very disappointed if we had to regain our status in League One.’

Mr Stewart also mentioned the loss of income to the club, also saying that he thought the squad at the New York Stadium at the moment is possibly the best squad there has been at Rotherham since he’s been in charge.

In 2008 when the future looked uncertain for Rotherham United in stepped Tony Stewart, the owner of ASD Lighting in the town, investing in the club seeing the Millers promoted, relegated, promoted via the play-offs and on the brink of securing a promotion place again when the EFL declared the postponements.

As it stands there are going to be more talks with the original start-back-up date of 3rd of April, in my mind, being a bit ambitious, although I don’t think anyone knows what will happen yet. Will the outstanding games be pushed into spare night slots? Will the season end as it is with the top three teams going up and bottom three going down? Will the season be suspended until a later month? Or will the season be written off and everyone start where they were in August 2019? (If so, how will that affect Bury FC?)

I suppose, eventually, somebody will let us know the answer to those questions, though I’m not holding my breath (well only for fifteen seconds twice a day if you get my meaning ……)
