Millers Bury Shakers

Rotherham United fought their way to three points over high-flying Bury at Gigg Lane this evening getting two goals in eleven minutes.

The visitors made a flying start with a goal in two minutes when Reuben Reid outpaced Bury’s defence and slotted the ball into the corner of the goal. Minutes later, Andy Bishop should have given the home side the equaliser but put his effort wide. Reid then got himself into the penalty area at the other end but Wayne Brown made a simple save from eight yards out. On ten minutes, Drewe Broughton got on the end of a Mickey Cummins cross and headed the ball into the top corner to double the visitors lead. Six minutes later, Dave Buchanan fired in a shot that went inches past Andy Warrington’s left hand post. On the half-hour mark, Bury did pull a goal back when Paul Scott’s header went past Warrington into the top left hand corner of the net. A few minutes later, Warrington had to be quick off his mark to parry away a shot from Andy Morrell and he also blocked another shot from the same player before half-time.

At the start of the second half, the hosts were straight on the attack with Morrell and Andy Bishop having shots at goal. But it could have been the Millers who went further into the lead when Alex Rhodes flew down the left and played a superb ball to Cummins who, with an empty net in front of him, shot well past the upright into the stand. At the other end a corner from Michael Jones caught the wind and forced Warrington to parry clear. Ex Miller, Chris O’Grady was brought on to replace Morrell and got a hostile reception from the visiting Millers fans which got worse when he seemingly fell over in the penalty area and referee Langford pointed to the penalty spot. Bishop took the penalty and his hard shot was well saved by Warrington much to the delight of the three hundred and thirty three travelling Millers behind his net. In the final five minutes, O’Gardy played a ball into the six yard box that Ben Futcher tried to force over the line but the Millers defence stood tall and hacked it away. In the dying seconds, Warrington again came to the rescue when he parried a shot from Buchanan round the post and from the resulting corner, ‘keeper Brown came up and almost scored from a header but the ball went just wide.

A much better display from the Millers tonight and a great three points.
