Manager Views On Yesterday’s Game

|

Rotherham United’s first game of the season saw them bring all three points home from the Cherry Red Records Stadium yesterday with Millers Manager Paul Warne coming away pleased with the first-half performance but not so impressed with the final forty-five minutes.

Speaking to iFOLLOW after the two-one win, the Millers Boss said, ‘I thought we were unplayable in the first-half but perhaps we should have gone in at half-time comfortably in the lead. We didn’t start the second half very well and Wimbledon gave us all sorts of problems.’

Warney is spot on. The first forty minutes we had Wimbledon on the ropes with the only thing missing being goals. After Freddie Ladapo had got his first goal for the club we had chances to get at least another couple before half-time although I thought Wimbledon were getting back into the game for the last five minutes of that half and carried it on after half-time scoring from the equaliser from a set-piece which the Gaffer wasn’t impressed with.

The Gaffer also praised his subs – Ben Wiles, Carlton Morris and Jamie Proctor – picking Wiles out for a bit of praise.

AFC Wimbledon’s Manager Wally Downes is also of the same opinion that the Millers were better in the first half than his side who came back and had a good second forty-five .

I thought Wimbledon had cottoned on to our formation and their Boss told their Official Site that he told his players at half-time that the game ‘wasn’t going to change too much’.

‘It was about us re-adjusting,’ Downes said, ‘making sure we asserted ourselves. I thought we did and deservedly got the goal. I thought we were taking the game to them at that stage.’

Like Warney Downes wasn’t impressed that the Millers’ second goal came from a corner saying, ‘it wasn’t a great goal but we didn’t have anyone brave enough to get on it and get the ball away.’

As a travelling fan yesterday I could see the faults but I could also see a lot of potential and, we can say what we want, but it doesn’t half feel good to get those first three points on the board.
