Is It Time To Start Talking New Contracts?

Rotherham United defender Joe Mattock is out of contract in the summer and his Manager Paul Warne has told The Star that he’d like to tie him down to the Millers for ‘years and years.’

The defence have worked hard this season and Joe has been part of that and, I think I might owe him an apology because, before the season, I was tipping him to have got frustrated and had a red card in the opening month. Actually, no red cards for the Millers yet this season.

But, of course, there won’t only be Joe out of contract – in my reckoning I think that Will Vaulks, Jon Taylor, Darren Potter, Joe Newell and Anthony Forde are out of contract come the summer and I think I’m right in thinking that Jamie Proctor and Ben Wiles will be looking for extensions or new contracts and maybe some of the players on the fringe of the first team too?

I do think that this should be the time we are thinking of tying down more than Mattock. For me there’s at least another five of those players I’d offer new contract too – or should I say at least five of those who I’d be worried others might be looking at in January.

Then, when we’ve got some of these players tied down I’d be looking at talking to the clubs of some of our loanees and hopefully get at least another full season loan out of them or pay for them to become Millers.

Who would you keep? Who would you let go? Which loan players would you like to see sign a Millers contract? Let us know here on Vital Rotherham.
