Rotherham United’s first away defeat since February today saw them lose narrowly to Millwall at the Den after going down to ten men.

Possession wise the stats tell us that the Lions had sixty per cent to Rotherham’s forty but the Millers won more of the duels having sixty-one per cent and sixty-two per cent success in the air. The hosts had eight corners to Rotherham’s three and our passing accuracy in our opponents half comes out at fifty-one per cent.

The Millers had seven shots at goal this afternoon of which two were on target while Millwall also had two on target from twelve shots – both goalkeepers making some fine saves today. Of those seven shots we had two were outside the box and five inside.

Our tackle rate was sixty-seven per cent successful and we gave away six fouls, half as many as our opponents. There was a yellow card for each team plus a straight red for the Millers today.

I’ve seen our game stats look a lot worse than this and I actually thought we played as well as Millwall for most of the game and sometimes, in the first half, looked the better side.

I know why we made the substitutions we did but, personally, and this is probably why I’d never make a manager, I’d have left Freddie Ladapo on and took Michael Smith off and also possibly left Dan Barlaser on as his set-pieces were causing problems in and around the box.

I don’t blame Smith for the penalty miss – I think it’s a big responsibility. Maybe if Barlaser had been on . . . but he wasn’t so there is no need to go down that road. I thought Angus MacDonald had a very good game and Ben Wiles did well when he came off the bench. In fact, I can’t think that there was a poor player out there today – but, you might think different?

Monday was always going to be a BIG game – now it’s MASSIVE.
