Head to Head

Head-to-Head – Rotherham v Sheffield Wednesday

|

Rotherham United welcome fellow relegation side and neighbours Sheffield Wednesday for the next game at the New York Stadium the last time being last season in October 2020. The game was only minutes old when the referee Jarred Gillett took the teams off as there was a rogue drone flying around the stadium. A ten minute break saw the teams back on and the hosts were soon in front after a Freddie Ladapo shot had been blocked but there was Jamie Lindsay to head the ball home after the ball looped up. On thirty-eight minutes Mikel Miller rounded Owls’ ‘keeper Cameron Dawson but was stopped from shooting when Tom Lees pulled him back with Lees seeing red and Dan Barlaser putting the resulting penalty away. On the stroke of half-time a Barlaser shot was saved by Dawson but came out to Lindsay who made it three-nil by hitting the ball into the net giving the Millers their first home win of the season.

February 2019 saw the Owls again in Rotherham with the visitors going in front thanks to a Fernando Forestieri goal on the thirty-fifth minute. But two minutes later the Millers were level after Michael Smith got the better of his marker and got the ball to Jon Taylor who thundered the ball into the back of the net. With fifteen minutes to go in the second half Richie Towell got on the end of a Joe Newell cross and sent nine thousand home fans wild making it two-one to the hosts. The board went up for an extra eight minutes when a lunge on Will Vaulks by Forestieri got the Owls player a yellow card. With Millers fans baying for the final whistle the visitors got a corner which fell to Dominic Iorfa who prodded the ball over the line to give Wednesday a point. When Forestieri tried to get into the away fans after scoring referee Darren England gave him a second yellow sending him for an early bath.

In the 2016/17 season the Owls were at the New York Stadium in the April which saw two first half goals from Steven Fletcher seal the win.

A Friday night in October 2015 saw the Owls take three points at the New York Stadium. Lucas Joao scored straight after half-time and four minutes later Fernando Forestieri doubled the score. On the stroke of full-time Tom Thorpe scored a consolation for the hosts.

March 2015 at the New York Stadium saw the first half end goalless but Ben Pringle put the hosts in front on fifty-seven minutes. Then it was a real frantic finish to the game when Caolan Lavery equalised on eighty-six minutes only for Jordan Bowery, who had only been on the pitch a couple of minutes, to put the Millers back in front a minute later. The Fourth Official put the board up that unbelievably said ‘seven minutes’ just as Steve Evans sent on Rob Milsom for Matt Derbyshire in a hope, we presume, to make things solid at the back. Well that didn’t work. On the ninety-second minute Jack Hunt saw yellow for, what looked like a fair challenge, on Chris Maguire with Lewis McGugan taking the resulting free kick and finding Atdhe Nuhiu’s head he made it two-all. On ninety-eight of those added seven minutes (hmm) Stevie May put the ball into the box finding Kieran Lee who slotted home for an Owls win.

The time before that the two met on Rotherham soil in the league was on New Years Day in 2003 at Millmoor when second-half goals from Shefki Kuqi and Adam Proudlock gave the visitors all three points. That day yellow cards were shown to the Millers’ Paul Hurst, John Mullin and Darren Garner and Tony Crane of the Owls.

Rotherham last beat their neighbours at Millmoor in the league in March 1976 when Dick Habbin scored the only goal of the game in front of 13,567 fans.

November 1920 saw the first Millmoor meeting between the sides with the hosts going away with all the points when two goals from Pape gave them a two-nil win.
