Head to Head

Head-to-Head – Rotherham v Norwich City

|

Rotherham United welcome Norwich City for their fourth league visit to the New York Stadium.

The last time the pair met in Rotherham was in March 2019 when the Millers were having the best of the game but Kenny McLean put the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time. Semi Ajayi found the bottom corner seven minutes into the second half to equalise but minutes later Ben Godfrey headed home a corner to make it two-one which gave Norwich a sixth win in a row.

January 2017 saw Jerry Yates open the scoring, on his league debut, for the hosts against the Canaries on seven minutes. Eleven minutes later Norwich were reduced to ten men after Nelson Oliveirahad pulled Kirk Broadfoot to the floor then whilst still down struck him in the face. In the second half Cameron Jerome got a Canaries equaliser but just a few minutes later Tom Adeyemi nodded in against his former club to give Rotherham all three points.

The first time the pair met at the New York Stadium was in April 2015 in a game that ended one-all. After throwing a punch at Craig Morgan former Miller Lewis Grabban was shown a straight red on twenty-five minutes but a Gary Hooper shot from twenty-five yards out put ten men Norwich into the lead on fifty-six minutes. Four minutes from time an Adam Hammill cross found the head of Jordan Bowery who gave the hosts a share of the spoils.

Before that the last time Norwich were in Rotherham for a league game was in January 2004 when Millmoor saw eight goals, a hat-trick and a sending off. City came to town as league leaders but it was the hosts who went ahead on twenty-eight minutes after a long throw from Sean Barker found Martin Butler in the area and the striker turned and shot across goal into the net. Just a minute later Norwich hit back with a goal from Iwan Roberts with a headed goal from Leon McKenzie making it two-one to the visitors on thirty-three minutes. On forty-two minutes a floated in pass from Chris Sedgwick found the head of Butler who got his and the Millers second of the afternoon. But on the stroke of half-time Sean Barker tracked Darren Huckerby into the box and when the City forward fell to the floor referee Mike Jones pointed to the spot. Guy Branston appeared from nowhere and decided to tell Huckerby what he thought of him, aided and abetted by Millers’ ‘keeper Mike Pollitt and Martin Butler who got a yellow for his trouble. Huckerby scored from the spot to make it three-two to Norwich. As the whistle went for half-time mayhem began with Rotherham Boss Ronnie Moore rushing on the pitch to have words with Huckerby while Guy Branston took umbrage (and rightly so) as the players trooped off when a Norwich player spat at him, punches were thrown and the teams spilled back out of the tunnel onto the pitch before the stewards finally managed to restore order. Branston was issued with a red card in the dressing room and Ronnie Moore was banished to the stands. The sixty-fifth minute saw more controversy when a Millers forward run saw Butler appear to grab hold of Robert Green in the visitors goal and as he went to ground the ball fell to the Millers striker who hit it into the back of the net to make it three-three, much to City’s disgust. Ten minutes later a good cross into the box from Darren Byfield for Butler saw City ‘keeper Green pull the Millers striker down but John Mullin came charging in and slammed the ball into the back of the net to give the Millers a four-three lead. In the final minute of the game the visitors got a corner which eventually fell to Damien Francis who hit the ball past everyone in the crowded area including Mike Pollitt to make it four-all.

The pair have met on Rotherham soil in the League Cup twice in the last fourteen years both being Norwich wins.
