Rotherham United welcome Reading for what will be their fifth visit to the New York Stadium the last one being in December 2018. The Royals who were managerless after sacking Paul Clement a week before, took the lead on nine minutes through Sam Baldock with Reading dominating the first half. The Millers came out better in the second half and Reading ‘keeper Anssi Jaakkola kept out shots from Richie Towell and Clark Robertson before Will Vaulks had a shot hacked off the line. With it looking like three lost points for the hosts Joe Mattock stabbed home the ball on the stroke of full-time to give his side a point.
The pair also met on Rotherham soil back in October 2016, which was Kenny Jacket’s first game in charge, with the only goal of the game coming four minutes from time from Paul McShane to give the visitors all three points. That day Lee Camp in the Millers goal saved a Garath McCleary penalty.
On a Tuesday night in October 2015 the Millers and Rotherham met at the New York Stadium when the game ended in a one-all draw. Nick Blackman opened the scoring for the visitors on twenty-six minutes with the equaliser coming from Danny Collins three minutes into the second half. Collins and Harry Toffolo were yellow carded on the night plus Andy Taylor from Reading.
The time before that the Millers met Reading at the NYS was in April 2015. Matt Derbyshire opened the scoring for the hosts on fifty-two minutes with Lee Frecklington doubling the score six minutes later. Oliver Norwood got a consolation for the visitors. The only booking of the day was for Derbyshire.
Another Tuesday night game between the two was at Millmoor in March 2005 when it looked like the game would end goalless. But a free-kick to the hosts in injury time was headed on to Paul Warne who scored from close range giving the managerless Millers just their second home win of the season.
The season before goals from Michael Proctor (2), Andy Monkhouse, Martin Butler and Richie Barker gave the Millers a five-one home win against Reading in League One. Former Miller Shaun Goater had opened the scoring on twenty minutes from the penalty spot for the visitors at Millmoor.
The first time the sides met at Millmoor was in March 1969 which was a four-one win for the Millers with two goals coming from Graham Leggett and one each from Johnny Mullen and Dave Watson.
The game at the Madejski Stadium in October saw a Yakou Meite double plus a Lucas Joao penalty helped the hosts move five points clear at the top of the Championship for Paul Warne’s first game back in the dugout after having to self-isolate.
