Rotherham United make the hop, skip and a jump trip to Hillsborough for this South Yorkshire derby.

It was last season that the pair last met on Sheffield soil, which was the first game for new manager Darren Moore.  He wouldn’t have been impressed on seventeen minutes when Michael Smith opened the scoring for the visitors but his life looked like being made a little better when some awful refereeing from Darren Bond saw Rotherham down to ten men when he sent off Smith on sixty-six minutes – a card that was hastily rescinded not twenty-four hours later.  An unfortunate own goal from Matt Olosunde looked to have given the hosts a point from the game on the eighty-second minute but when a poorly taken corner six minutes into time added on by the Owls landed at the feet of Freddie Ladapo off he ran down the pitch, being urged on by the Millers commentators in the stadium and every Miller watching from home, he struck the ball beautifully to see it nestle in the bottom right-hand corner of the net to give Rotherham all three points.

In December 2018 the teams got a point apiece at Hillsborough.  On the stroke of half-time Lucas Joao put the hosts one-up but Michael Smith got a Millers equaliser a minute into the second half. Richie Towell sent the visiting fans barmy when he made it two-one to Rotherham on the fifty-fifth minute but less than ten minutes later Joao struck again with a header to give the Owls a point.

Two seasons before the game between the two looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the fourth minute of time added on when Richard Wood was adjudged to have fouled Lucas Joao in the area and, much to everyone’s surprise, saw a red card – this was later rescinded. Steven Fletcher scored the spot-kick giving the Owls bragging rights on the day.

The season before at Hillsborough Matt Derbyshire scored the only goal of the game on the twenty-first minute to give the Millers all three much needed points. The season before was a goalless draw.

Before the two met in the Championship in the last few years the last time they met in League One was  in August 2002. The hosts went in front with a goal from Craig Armstrong on just eight minutes. Just before the half-hour mark a poor tackle saw Paul Warne bungled over in the penalty area with Alan Lee stepping up and sending Kevin Pressman the wrong way which levelled the scores up. Pressman made amends by making some superb saves in the second half but in the final minute of the game a fantastic strike from Darren Garner, who had replaced Stewart Talbot just over twenty minutes earlier, literally flew into the net to send the travelling Millers fans wild.

The season before this, strangely enough, the score was the same – a two-one win for the Millers at Hillsborough. This time an Alan Lee goal opened the scoring on fifty minutes with Shefki Kuqi climbing highest to equalise twenty minutes later. With it look like it was going to be a point a piece up a free-kick in the final minute of the game was met by Richie Barker, who had come on for Mark Robins on the sixty-eighth minute, and he headed the ball past Kevin Pressman into the net for the winning goal.

Rotherham first beat Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in September 1951 when there were eight goals in the game. The score was five-three to the visitors with Jack Shaw getting two goals and Jack Grainger, Charlie Tomlinson and Peter Wragg, with his first ever league goal, scoring too.

The two first met at Hillsborough in March 1921 when it was a two-nil win for the Owls.

The game at the New York Stadium earlier this season was a win for the visitors. A penalty in time added on in the first half was missed by Kieran Sadlier for the Millers with second half goals from  Florian Kamberi and Lee Gregory giving the Owls the win.
