Rotherham United’s next away game of the season sees them travel to the Bermondsey part of London to take on Millwall at The Den.

A Ben Pringle tap-in four minutes into the second half gave the Millers all three points the last time the teams met in Millwall in August 2014. This was the Lion’s first loss in a twelve game run which stretched back to March of the previous season. Pringle was later linked with a move to Millwall but, as we know, didn’t go.

January 2007 was the time before that the Millers travelled to Millwall was when both sides were in League One. The Lions won four-nil with Neil Harris, Chris Zebroski and a certain Darren Byfield (2) scoring the goals. The Millers had Justine Cochrane sent off ten minutes from time after his long-running feud with Lions’ Alan Dunne saw Referee Keith Hill give him a second yellow card. Neil Harris wrote himself into the record books when he opened the scoring on sixteen minutes when he set-up a new goal scoring league record of ninety-four goals.

January 2005 saw Rotherham win at Millwall. Alan Dunne put the hosts in front in the first half but second half goals from Martin Butler and Rob Scott gave the Millers all three points.

Of course us Millers can’t think about going to Millwall without speaking about our six-nil drubbing of the Lions at the New Den in the first game of the 2002/3 season. The Millers had little hope of getting anything when the game kicked-off after they’d narrowly avoided relegation the season before while the London team had made the play-offs but Darren Byfield, then a Millers, pleased the travelling supporters when he scored the first goal on twenty-three minutes from a Paul Warne cross. Lions’ ‘keeper Tony Warner was at fault for the second goal when he let a Martin McIntosh free-kick from thirty-five yards out go through his hands and over the line just before half-time. And the Millers were like a team possessed in the second half when Byfield got the third after seven minutes followed by a Chris Sedgwick goal twenty minutes later. Ten minutes from time a chip from Byfield gave him his hat-trick and he rounded the ‘keeper a minute later to get his fourth and the Millers sixth.
