Rotherham United welcome a Manchester City U21 side to the New York Stadium for the next round of the Papa John Trophy.

This is the second time the pair have met in this competition, the first time being in August 2017, again at the New York Stadium, when David Ball put the Millers in front on sixty-four minutes. When it looked like the hosts would win the game up popped Benjamin Garre for City making it one-all in time added on taking the game to penalties. That season it was ABBA penalties which saw Lukas Nmecha score first for the visitors with Will Vaulks and Jon Taylor having seeing their spot-kicks saved. Matt Smith and Taylor Richards scored for City with Anthony Forde and Jonson Clarke-Harris hitting the net for the Millers. Jacob Davenport for City missed the next penalty but Charlie Oliver scored to see Manchester City get two points for a four-two penalty win.
