Head to Head

Head-to-Head – Millers v Coventry

|

Rotherham United welcome Coventry City for their third league visit to the New York Stadium, the last one being in October 2019 which was a good victory for the hosts who took the lead on thirteen minutes from a Matt Crooks header. City’s  Kyle McFadzean  left his ‘keeper short five minutes later with Michael Smith bearing down on him and  Marko Marosi  could only bring the Rotherham striker down who then made it two-nil from the penalty spot. The fifty-seventh minute saw McFadzean’s already bad day made worse when he brought Crooks down in the area and receiving a second yellow to see him first in the dressing room. Smith stepped up to score his second penalty of the afternoon making it three-nil to the hosts and when a mix-up in the visitors defence saw Crooks take the ball off the toes of Michael Rose the Millers man poked the ball over the line to give Rotherham a four-nil victory.

The only other time that Coventry have met Rotherham in the league at the New York Stadium was on New Years Day 2014 which was better for the visitors despite Joe Skarz putting the hosts in front on thirty-five minutes. Millers skipper Craig Morgan saw red on the seventieth minute for a poor challenge with Carl Baker scoring the resulting penalty, Franck Moussa put them in front. Rotherham got a penalty themselves which Michael O’Connor saw saved and in the last minute Baker scored his second to give the visitors a three-one victory.

The last time that Coventry City played at Millmoor was again New Years Day, this time 2005, when both sides were in The Championship. Jose Junior opened the scoring for the Millers, who was on loan from Derby County, on thirty-nine minutes but second half goals from Stern John and Ady Williams gave the visitors the win on the day.

The last time the Millers beat Coventry at Millmoor was a cold Tuesday night in December 2003. The opening goal was on the thirteenth minute from Darren Byfield with Shaun Barker adding a second five minutes before half-time. No further goals gave the Millers all three points.

The first time that the sides met in the league at Millmoor was on 17th January 1920 in the Old English Division Two. Sandy Glennon, Sammy Lamb, Herbert Lounds and Albert Pape scored goals for the Millers to give them a four-three win.

The game at Coventry’s temporary home of St Andrew’s in December was a three-one win to City with first half goals from Maxime Biamou and Tyler Walker and a second half goal that saw a shot from  Leo Ostigard hit the leg of Michael Smith and go in making it three. The Millers got a late consolation from the penalty spot which Dan Barlaser scored.
