Head-to-Head – Millers v Cardiff

|

Rotherham United make the journey into Wales today to take on Cardiff City for their next encounter in the Championship.

The last time the Millers visited Cardiff City Stadium was one that Millers fans will want to forget – and if that’s so then skip this paragraph! City were on a roll and this was their third consecutive win with a goal from Kadeem Harris giving Neil Warnock’s side an early lead. A sloppy back-pass on the half-time mark saw Junior Hoilett put the ball past Richard O’Donnell to make it two and second half goals from Craig Noone and Kenneth Zohore (two) gave the Bluebirds an emphatic home victory. ‘I didn’t feel good about the game with it being my own club and the situation they’re in,’ former Miller Warnock said at the end of the match while Paul Warne apologised to the fans saying, ‘they (the fans) don’t deserve that.’

The game before that in Cardiff between the two saw the teams getting a point a-piece. Anthony Pilkington got a ‘strange hat-trick’ after putting City one up on twenty-five minutes four minutes into the second half he put the ball in his own net to make it two-one to the Millers after Joe Newell had equalised just before half-time. But he made amends on the hour mark scoring for Cardiff to make it two-all. Six minutes before time the host went down to ten when Lee Peltier was sent-off for a second yellow card.

We have to go back to August 1998 for the Millers last victory in Cardiff, which was at Ninian Park. The only goal of the game came on the sixty-third minutes from Lee Glover.

The first time the teams ever met in Cardiff was in the Old Division Two on Easter Monday 1921 when City scored the only goal of the game.

The game at the New York Stadium earlier this season started with cold but bright weather and ended with snow. It saw Sheyi Ojo put the Cardiff in front three minutes before half-time with Matt Crooks equalising just before the hour mark. But a goal five minutes from time from Joe Bennett gave the visitors all three points.
