Rotherham United make the short trip to Oakwell to take on Barnsley and will be hoping to do a great deal better than the last time the pair met here.

August 2016 saw the Millers at Oakwell and had a bit of a torrid time but managed to hold-out going into half-time nil-nil. But, Barnsley got the better of the Millers defence four times in the second half with Marc Roberts, former Miller Adam Hammill, Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Camp putting the ball past Lee Camp in the Rotherham goal. After the game then Rotherham Manager, Alan Stubbs, said, ‘we have to look at ourselves.’

We then have to go back to 2005 for the last time the pair met on Barnsley soil and that turned out to be quite a game with Trevor Kettle becoming the star of the show. It was all going well for the Millers when they went in at half-time in front thanks to a Shaun Barker goal just after the half-hour mark from a super Paul McLaren curling free-kick. But the second half was something else! A challenge from Steven Watt on Deon Burton saw the Millers player penalised for diving and as he’d already had a yellow the visitors found themselves down to ten men on fifty-six minutes. The Millers held on until Mr Kettle decided to get himself involved again and gave Lee Williamson a second yellow leaving Rotherham with just nine men on the pitch. And it got worse because not only did Watt score on the stroke of full time to make it one-all, Rotherham Manager Mick Harford was sent to the stands by Mr Kettle and as the final whistle blew skipper Colin Murdock went over to the ref to complain and he was also given his marching orders. And it wasn’t even a dirty game!

The last time Rotherham won in the league at Oakwell was back on Good Friday in 1969 when the only goal of the game in front of over thirteen thousand fans was from Lee Brogden.

The game earlier in the season at the New York Stadium saw Barnsley take the lead on eight minutes thanks to a Cauley Woodrow strike and doubled the lead seven minutes later when Alex Mowatt’s twenty yard shot ended in the far corner of the net. The Millers did get back in the game with a Michael Smith header but the Tykes took all the points home to Barnsley.
