Football could be starting again in England in June.

The Government have had a meeting today with with the Football Association, Premier League and English Football League with Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden saying ‘plans have progressed’.

The coronavirus put paid to football in March and although it will be a slow progress there could be football next month although, of course, it will be behind closed doors.

Mr Dowden was hoping for a Premier League start on 12th June but saying it would only go ahead when ‘safe’ to do so with the players and staffs health always going to come first.

‘It is now up to the football authorities to agree and finalise the detail of their plans,’ said Mr Dowden, ‘and the Government and  our medical experts will continue to offer guidance and support.’

England’s deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jonathan Van-Tam said, ‘There will be small, carefully measured, step-wise approaches to see what can be achieved safely. The first of those is to return safely to training, still observing social distancing.’

I’m a little surprised at this announcement to be honest. There are still players testing positive for the virus and there will be players who will be scared to play – I know I would. Who wants to take this horrible, unpredictable virus home to their family?

But, on the other hand, we’ve all been asking for clarity of the situation regarding football (well, all sport) and we now have that. I will still be surprised if League One and League Two re-start the season but I have been wrong before (many times).
