Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne has been telling us for a few weeks that he’s after a centre-back – in fact, after saying he had already met the player it seems that the deal could be in the bag.

Coincidentally, in the Sunderland Echo earlier today it’s rumoured that the Black Cats could be willing to let centre-back Jack Baldwin leave.

The twenty-six year old began his career with Hartlepool United before going on to make over one hundred appearances for Peterborough United. In July 2018 he moved back up North to the Stadium of Light making forty-one appearances last season which included the Wembley final of the Football League Trophy.

The reason Sunderland Manger Jack Ross has given for letting the versatile defender leave is that he can’t guarantee him first team football. In an interview with The Star at the weekend Millers’ Boss Warne also said that the player he’d been in talks with was told that he wouldn’t go straight into the side and would have to earn his place.

Would it be worth Warney taking a look at Baldwin? Could he be already on his radar? Or is it just one of those coincidences that both the Millers and the defender are named in the same article? After all, the Gaffer did say he was ‘driving South’ to talk to a player and we all know that Sunderland is anything but South.

Will the Millers have a new player in before the weekend?  Only time will tell.
