Rotherham United’s first Cup game of the season sees Wigan Athletic at the New
York Stadium for the First Round of the Carabao Cup

.The Millers and the Latics have met twice before in this competition when it went under the name of the Coca Cola Cup.

The first leg was at Springfield Park in August 1993 which was a one-nil win for Rotherham with Des Hazel scoring the goal. The second leg at Millmoor saw the Millers get a four-two win with goals coming from Ian Banks, Nicky Law, Imre Varadi and an own goal. Rotherham went on to take on Portsmouth in the second round.

The Millers got through the First Round of this competition last year with a two-one home win over Lincoln City. Jamie Proctor put the hosts in front six minutes before half-time with a Billy Knott goal on sixty-four minutes equalising for the Imps. But Anthony Forde, who had come off the bench fifteen minutes earlier, sent Rotherham through to a Second Round tie away at Huddersfield.

Wigan also won their First Round game at home to Blackpool with first half goals from Josh Laurent and Jordan Flores giving them a two-one win which gave them a visit to Villa Park for the Second Round.

The last time the pair met at the New York Stadium was in November 2017. Will Grigg opened the scoring on fourteen minutes with the hosts equalising two minutes later with a curling shot from David Ball. Alex Bruce, with his back to goal, put the Latics back in front on twenty-eight minutes and Michael Jacobs made it three-one on the hour mark.
