Rotherham United are in Carabao Cup action on Tuesday night when the make the trip to take on Fleetwood town when Ross Joyce from Cleveland has the whistle.

Ross has been refereeing since the age of fifteen when he began in the middle in Cleveland for a junior game and in 2007 he began refereeing in the Blue Square Premier League. The beginning of the 2013/14 season saw him in charge of games in the Football Conference before being appointed to the Football League in August 2015.

This will be the sixth time Ross has been in charge of a Millers game, the first being at the New York Stadium for the last game of the 2017/18 season when Blackpool were the visitors. A Will Vaulks goal thirteen minutes into the second half was the only goal of the game with Michael Ihiekwe getting the only yellow card that day.

Ross was in the middle at our game in November 2019 at Stadium:mk which saw Alex Gilbey and Joe Mason give MK Dons an early lead. The Millers fought back in the second half with a sixty-six minute goal from Dan Barlaser and two further goals from half-time substitute Freddie Ladapo gave Rotherham all three points. Ross sent off Baily Cargill in the final minute of the game after an altercation with the Rotherham bench.

He was also in charge of our last game of the 2019/20 season, which was cut short due to the Covid pandemic, when Rotherham travelled to Spotland to take on Rochdale. Former Miller Ian Henderson put Dale two up with Matthew Lund making it three before a Jamie Lindsay consolation goal on the stroke of full-time make it three-one to the hosts.

In the 2020/21 season Ross was in charge of the Millers twice the first being when Gillingham were the visitors to the New York Stadium. Olly Lee put the Gills in front on just five minutes but goals from Freddie Ladapo and Mickel Miller saw Rotherham go in at half-time with the lead. After being pulled back in the area Michael Ihiekwe won a penalty for the hosts which Dan Barlaser duly put away. With twenty minutes to go the Gills went down to ten men after Ryan Jackson was red carded for pulling over Chieo Ogbene and Barlaser stepped up to take the second penalty of the evening but saw it come back off the crossbar to safety. But he made up for the miss ten minutes later when a lovely ball from Joshua Kayode found him on the edge of the area where he shot making it four-one. And a shot in the final minute of the match from Ogbene hit the underside of the crossbar and went into the net giving the Millers a five-one win.

Charlton Athletic were the visitors the last time Ross was in the middle for a Millers game when a fifty-fifth minute George Dobson goal gave Charlton the three points.

Ross has had three games this season and shown two yellow cards in each one.

Running the line at the Highbury Stadium are Matthew Sowerby and Daniel Smith while the Fourth Official will be Martin Coy.
