Rotherham United’s next game will see League Two side Crewe Alexandra at the New York Stadium in the first round of this season’s Carabao Cup.
The furthest the Millers got in this competition was the 1960/61 Final when Aston Villa were the opponents. The game was over two legs and due to adverse weather which caused a fixture congestion the final was put back until the start of the following season. August at Millmoor was a two-nil win for the hosts with Alan Kirkman and Barry Webster getting the goals. Two weeks later it was off to Villa Park with Alan O’Neill and Harry Burrows scoring to make it two-all on aggregate. The game went to extra time when Roy Ironside pushed a shot from Jimmy MacEwan onto the crossbar only for Peter McParland to collect the rebound and put it into the back of the net which saw Villa win the first ever League Cup Final three-two on aggregate.
Crewe have reached round three of the League Cup ten times – 1960, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1992, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006 and the last time being in 2008 where they got wins over Barnsley and Bristol City to get a tie at Anfield. Daniel Agger put Liverpool in front of the quarter of an hour mark with former Miller Michael O’Connor equalising ten minutes later. A headed goal from Brazilian Lucas Leiva just before the hour mark saw the Premier League side through to round four of the Carling Cup.
Never having met in this competition before the Millers and the Alex have met eighty times in various Leagues – Rotherham winning thirty of those, Crewe one less – five times in the FA Cup which Crewe have won three times, the Millers twice and once in the Football League Trophy which Rotherham won four-two at the Alexandra Stadium.
The last time the pair met at the New York Stadium was in September 2021 when Ollie Rathbone put Rotherham in front on fifty-four minutes. A foul in the area by Wes Harding saw him get sent off in stoppage time with Chris Porter putting away the resulting penalty to give both teams a point.
