Rotherham United 0 Sheffield Wednesday 2
                                             Kamberi (50), Gregory (77)

Rotherham United came off worse in the first South Yorkshire derby of the season with the Owls getting two second half goals and all three points.

The Millers started the better with Chieo Ogbene sending a good ball through to Ben Wiles who sent it over the crossbar followed by a cross from Ogbene finding Joshua Kayode who headed over. On five minutes the hosts might have gone in front when a good one-two between Michael Smith and Ollie Rathbone found Kayode but the flag went up for off-side, something we were going to see a lot of in the first half. A first chance for the visitors saw Florian Kamberi send the ball into the Millers faithful behind the net. A dangerous ball in from Shane Ferguson found the head of Smith but again it went over the crossbar before Wiles got the better of former Miller loanee Lewis Wing with the Owls player receiving a yellow for a foul with the resulting free-kick being well punched away by Owls’ ‘keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell. A nasty tackle on Ogbene left him on the floor needing treatment and despite him trying to come back and play on he was subbed on twenty-five minutes Kieran Sadlier taking his place. A lovely ball from Ferguson found Sadlier on the back post but the linesman said the ball had gone out. At the other end Richard Wood did well to block a shot from Kamberi before a ball in from Wing was just too far for Dominic Iorfa. A super tackle from Wood stopped Jaden Brown in his tracks before a curling shot from Sadlier went wide. In time added on Kayode got the ball and ran into the area where he was bundled over Callum Paterson and referee Marc Edwards had no hesitation pointing to the spot and giving Paterson a yellow card. While Kayode picked the ball up, Sadlier placed it taking the spot-kick which was well saved by Peacock-Farrell.

Sheffield Wednesday came out the better for the second half and the half was just five minutes old when they took the lead. Callum Paterson got around his marker and put the ball across goal with Florian Kamberi finding himself in space firing into the roof of the net from close in. Liam Palmer was first to a lose ball but Ben Wiles did well to get it back with the Millers going close when the ball fell to Kieran Sadlier some twenty-five yards out who saw his shot go inches past the upright. A long throw from Wes Harding saw the ball go into a melee of players with Michael Smith’s header being saved. The visitors brought on Lee Gregory and Dennis Adeniran for Kamberi and Lewis Wing while Freddie Ladapo came on for the Millers for Joshua Kayode. Ollie Rathbone saw yellow after he stopped Barry Bannan getting away. Bannan sent a lovely ball in for Gregory with Millers’ ‘keeper Viktor Johansson doing well to get a hand to it and send it away from danger. Rotherham’s final change came on seventy-three minutes with Rathbone making way for Dan Barlaser, probably because of the yellow card. The Millers got a corner which Bailey Peacock-Farrell took umbrage with and got a yellow card, the corner coming to nothing. Smith did well to chase the ball to the goal line and send a cross to Shane Ferguson with Dominic Iorfa putting the ball behind for another corner which bothered nobody. Johansson did well to save the ball from Adeniran but a minute later, after a poor decision initially from Wiles who had the ball taken off him, Adeniran’s low effort skidded into the area with the Millers’ ‘keeper seeing the ball fall out of his usually safe hands into the path of Gregory who made it two-nil with Millers fans looking hopefully towards the linesman whose flag stayed down. Rotherham tried to get back into the game with Barlaser heading wide and another former Miller Jack Hunt getting yellow for a poor challenge on Barlaser. A couple of Millers’ corners came to nothing before Johansson saved from an Adeniran shot before the Owls substitute saw yellow for a foul on the Millers’ ‘keeper.

Rotherham had chances this afternoon but just couldn’t get it in the net, Wednesday scoring their chances and, apart from the goals, I don’t think there was much to chose between the teams.

Attendance – 11,522 (2,608 Owls)
