The first game between sides on minus points was won by a bizarre goal from Alex Rhodes to give the Millers all three points at Don Valley today against Luton Town.

The first half was a scrappy affair and neither ‘keeper had much to do although Drewe Broughton should have put the home team in front on ten minutes when falling backwards he lifted the ball just over from eight yards out. Eight minutes later, Rhodes, as calm-as-you-like, put the ball under Dean Brill who came out to try and narrow the angle, and was disappointed to see it hit the side netting. Ten minutes before the end of the first half, a Rossi Jarvis corner found Micky Spillane’s head but he put the ball over the crossbar. On half-time, Andy Warrington made a powerful clearance from Asa Hall, who shot from twenty-five yards out.

Both teams came out looking more like they wanted to win in the second half although neither team looked like scoring until the sixty-first minute when Rhodes seem to over hit a cross from the left hand touchline and it cleared both defenders and Brill and flew in the top of the net for the only goal of the game. The Millers were on top after they scored and Rhodes brought off a great save from Brill and Reuben Reid had a shot cleared off the line from a corner.
