Rotherham United march on to the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy after coming back from one down to win four-two at Crewe this evening.

The first chance of the evening fell to the Millers after Tolaji Bola won the visitors a corner which found Jamie Lindsay on the edge of the area who brought off a good save from Crewe ‘keeper Will Jaaskelainen. And it was Lindsay again a few minutes later after a one-two with Will Grigg who had an effort blocked although the referee pulled it back for a foul. On twelve minutes Oliver Finney claimed a loose ball in the middle of the pitch and sent it to Scott Robertson who in turn found Mikael Mandron whose low shot went past the diving Josh Vickers in the Millers goal to give the hosts the lead. At the other end only a great header from Connor O’Riordan stopped Grigg getting to a super ball in from Bola before Lindsay had a shot from distance that was cleared by the Crewe defence. The hosts came close to a second on twenty minutes after Kayne Ramsay, on loan from Southampton, got the better of Joe Mattock sending the ball to Finney but he shot just wide. Just before the half-hour mark Wes Harding was the first to see yellow after a trip on Travis Johnson which was followed by a brilliant one handed save by Jaaskelainen from a Michael Smith volley from outside the box. Minutes later a ball from Vickers found Smith who sent a long ball for Bola who did well to keep the ball in before putting it into the box for Grigg but the on loan striker can only head the ball over. Grigg and Smith worked well together with the seeing a shot blocked but four minutes before the break the Millers were back in the game when a ball from Smith found Kieran Sadlier outside the box and the forward struck the ball into the net to equalise for the visitors. And it was Sadlier a couple of minutes later who found Bola with a lovely cross with the midfielder finding Jaaskelainen equal to his shot.

In the opening minutes of the second half Rotherham had a couple of corners which came to nothing before a chance for Michael Smith saw the Millers striker shoot straight into the arms of Will Jaaskelainen. But it wasn’t much of a surprise when Rotherham took the lead after a long throw was initially cleared the ball was sent back by Will Grigg to Smith who put the ball in from close range to make it two-one to the visitors. And it could have been another after some good work between Jamie Lindsay and Kieran Sadlier but Terell Thomas was there to clear before Lindsay could get on the end of Sadlier’s pass. The first change of the game was for the visitors with Joshua Kayode coming on for Michael Smith. At the other end Scott Robertson got clear of his marker with his cross put behind for a corner which he took short to Regan Griffiths with Josh Vickers doing well to parry the ball to safety. A double substitution from Crewe saw Luke Murphy and Joel Tabiner replace Oliver Finney and Kayne Ramsay who had just received a yellow card. The Millers followed suite with Tolaji Bola and Jamie Lindsay making way for Ollie Rathbone and Shane Ferguson but before the pair could settle in Crewe equalised after Murphy set up Scott Roberson whose rocket of a shot gave Vickers no chance. Two-all. The game got a bit niggly with both sides giving away fouls before another two changes for the Millers saw Chieo Ogbene and Freddie Ladapo on for Will Grigg and Joe Mattock. Ladapo’s first job was to win a foul off Donervon Daniels which Sadlier took getting it over the wall but also over the crossbar. With eight minutes to go the visitors re-took the lead after some great work from Rathbone sent the ball to Ogbene who crossed into the area finding the head of Kayode who scored his first goal in a Millers shirt to make it three-two to Rotherham. The hosts made more changes Connor Salisbury and Chris Porter coming on for Regan Griffiths and Mikael Mandron. Some good work from Crewe shot-stopper Jaaskelainen stopped a shot from Ladapo going in after a lovely cross from Kayode before Kayode himself had a great chance to get a second but couldn’t sort his feet out and the ball went to safety. Ladapo had the ball in the net but was offside before Vickers did well to deny Tabiner an equaliser at the other end. In time added on Hakeem Odoffin did well to get his body in the way of a shot from Tabiner before Harding flew down the other end sending the ball to Ladapo who stung the palms of Jaakelainen. Ferguson had a shot saved before the Millers made sure of victory with a a shot from Ladapo finding the top corner of the net to give Rotherham a four-two win.
