It’s that time of the week when here on Vital Rotherham we take a quick look back at what’s been happening with Rotherham United.
Well, with the team at a training camp in Germany there hasn’t been a lot happening at the New York Stadium itself – perhaps not as much as was hoped? I have a feeling, though it is only my own feeling, that the club were expecting to get a couple of signings in early in the week who would fly over to Germany to join the rest of the squad. That hasn’t happened, so perhaps it was only me who was actually expecting this.
Training over in Germany has been tough and the Millers played a behind closed doors game with Bremen II where goals from Kyle Vassell and Michael Smith helped Rotherham get a two-all draw.
The Millers took on FC. Magdeburg earlier today and as well as a number of yellow cards being dished out (Ref being finicky or players forgetting it’s a friendly?) Rotherham lost the game two-one. The hosts took and scored an early penalty with the Millers having the opportunity at the other end to score from the spot after Jamie Proctor was fouled in the area. Procts picked himself up, dusted himself down took the spot-kick but missed. After a good ball in from Freddie Ladapo it fell to Kyle Vassell who equalised just after the hour mark for the visitors. But ten minutes from time Magdeburg got the winner, a deflected shot going past Laurence Bilboe who had subbed Lewis Price earlier in the half.
Back in Rotherham and tickets have gone on sale for our first game which is the away fixture with AFC Wimbledon. Tickets also went on sale for our home friendlies with West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City as well as the League One games in August against Lincoln City (Saturday, 10th August) and Bury (Tuesday, 20th August). There are also tickets to buy for our away friendly at the Proact Stadium when we take on Chesterfield on Saturday 20th July.
The away tickets for our visit to the Cherry Red Record Stadium are being sold on the Millers’ loyalty points system and there have been a few moans about this on social media. Rotherham fans have been given less that eight hundred tickets for their visit to AFC Wimbledon of which just sixty-four were seats. To me the points system is the only way to do things – and it’s nothing to do with ‘real’ fans are ‘part-time fans’ it’s because, I think, it’s the fairest way and it stops all those hours of queueing.

This week David Ball left the New York Stadium for pastures new in New Zealand.
We also found out this week that the Manchester United U21 side will be in the Millers’ Group H in the EFL Trophy this season – and looking at the past U21 Red Devils it could be well worth going to watch this fixture when it’s announced.
There has been more speculation this week regarding former Miller Grant Ward with some sources saying he has been offered a contract by Rotherham and others saying they are giving him more time to think about it. Why is that then? Doesn’t like what we’ve offered him and he’s waiting for a better offer? Doesn’t want to ‘go back’, after all, some people don’t. Or is it just agent talk?
Rotherham United midfielder Ben Wiles told us that he is grateful to have been given the number 8 shirt for the coming season and that he hopes to do it the same justice as a former holder of that shirt, Lee Frecklington, did.
So, no new faces in this week – will we see any next week? I’ll stick my neck out and say almost certainly but don’t quote me on that!
