Leyton Orient 1- 0 Rotherham United
Happe (68)
Leyton Orient hadn’t won at home this season so, I suppose, it was sod’s law that they would do it last night and, maybe, it was some good ‘keeping from Cameron Dawson that kept it down to one-nil.
A poor pass in the opening minutes from Jack Currie almost let the Millers in when Mallik Wilkes got hold of the ball and let fly only to see it controlled by Omar Beckles and cleared. A foul by Reece James saw the hosts win a free-kick but it was blocked by the players in blue before the Millers won a corner taken by Joe Powell who sent it into the box finding Joe Rafferty who put his shot wide. A corner a couple of minutes later didn’t see the ball get past the first defender before both Hakeem Odoffin and Sam Nombe won free-kicks the latter in a promising position with Powell taking it but seeing it go straight into the arms of O’s ‘keeper Josh Keeley. On the twentieth minute Leyton Orient came into the game and won free-kicks which the Millers kept out. At the other end a corner went into the crowded box with Odoffin climbing highest only to see his effort go behind – although it did appear to come off a defender – which was followed by a Powell free-kick that came back to him on the edge of the area only for his shot to take a deflection which was easy for Keeley to collect. Orient countered and flew down the pitch with Cameron Dawson in the Rotherham goal making a good save from Daniel Agyei. Minutes later Dawson was on hand to make another save after a good ball from Ethan Galbraith found Tom James who shot from outside the box. In time added on Galbraith again was the organiser when he found Ollie O’Neill just inside the area the midfielder seeing a flying save from Dawson stop him scoring. The half ended with Charlie Kelman getting a yellow card for a foul on Reece James.
An early corner for Rotherham in the second half saw Omar Beckles get to Joe Powell’s cross before Sam Nombe had time to shoot from close range and despite being down to ten men a few minutes later with Zak Jules receiving treatment off the pitch, good work from the visitors saw Reece James send a ball to Powell on the edge of the area only for him to see Josh Keeley get down well to save. At the other end Cameron Dawson saved from Ollie O’Neill which was followed by a Tom James cross finding Beckles who sent the ball not only high but wide. The first change of the evening came just before the hour mark when Liam Kelly made way for Cohen Bramall. A foul on Daniel Agyei brought a yellow card for Joe Powell. A clearance from Joe Rafferty only reached Jordan Brown who sent the ball past the upright before the Millers best chance of the night came after some nice football saw the ball fall to Mallik Wilks. He beat his marker sending a lovely cross for Cameron Humphreys who headed wide when it looked easier to score. Two minutes later the hosts went in front after referee Alex Chilowicz, who had let most things go in the first half, gave a harsh foul against Wilks who appeared to take the ball off Jack Currie before he fell over. The set-piece was in a good position which Tom James sent into the area finding Dan Happe who headed home without a challenge on him. The Millers might have equalised straight away after a corner came out to Bramall who sent in a super ball to find Nombe in the box his diving header going inches past the post. At the other end a cross from Agyei fell to Darren Pratley who put the ball wide with Tom James the next player to be booked for a poor challenge on Bramall. Another change for the visitors saw Jack Holmes on for Zak Jules on seventy-seven minutes with the substitute soon in on the action sending a great ball for Wilks who forced Josh Keeley into a save. Former Miller Dominic Ball was brought on for Orient with Darren Pratley going the other way. Agyei got to a loose ball before Christ Tiehi the Miller man recovering to clear before he was replaced by Jordan Hugill. A free-kick from Tom James was kept out well by Dawson as the board went up for an extra seven minutes the resulting corner being put over by Ollie O’Neill. A change for the hosts saw Jayden Sweeney replace Daniel Agyei. The Millers were trying to get forward and when a cross from Joe Rafferty found Wilks it looked like he might equalise but he sent the ball wide.
A second one-nil defeat for the Millers in three days sees Rotherham drop to seventeenth in the table. It wasn’t the most exciting game to be honest but it really was one we could have won. But, we didn’t.
So, it’s on to another home game on Saturday when Steve Evans’ former side, Stevenage, are in town – maybe that will add a spark we could all do with.
Attendance – 6,314
Referee – Alex Chilowicz
